Any good books I should be reading?
Lakshmi.Kolvar said: Odin.Liela said: Kolvar-- is that Chronicles of the Necromancer the one that has the book The Drowning City? I LOVED that book. If that's the same series, I need to get the rest of them. I can't just grab the book and check because I packed all my books for the move. ;; The Summoner the Blood King Dark Haven The Dark Lady's Chosen Those are the books so far, so probably not the same thing. still get them! Bugger. I will look in to them anyhow though, thanks! Liela, you've read Oryx and Crake? I was beginning to think my cousin and I were the only ones!

Here's my 3 favorite book series I'd die for. I copied plot summaries from wiki / Amazon. #1 The Dark Tower Series (7 books) In the story, Roland Deschain is the last living member of a knightly order known as gunslingers and the last of the line of "Arthur Eld", his world's analogue of King Arthur. Politically organized along the lines of a feudal society, it shares technological and social characteristics with the American Old West but is also magical. Many of the magical aspects have vanished from Mid-World, but traces remain as do relics from a technologically advanced society. Roland's quest is to find the Dark Tower, a fabled building said to be the nexus of all universes. Roland's world is said to have "moved on", and it appears to be coming apart at the seams. Mighty nations have been torn apart by war, entire cities and regions vanish without a trace and time does not flow in an orderly fashion. Sometimes, even the sun rises in the north and sets in the east. As the series opens, Roland's motives, goals and age are unclear, though later installments shed light on these mysteries. For a detailed synopsis of the novels, see the relevant article for each book. Awesome Series. I stole this series on hardcover from my mom and I read first book, loved it. Started 2nd one and I couldn't get into it. Been sitting on my shelf for 2-3 years now >.> Fairy.Spence said: Liela, you've read Oryx and Crake? If you are into Stephen King like I am, you will appreciate them a lot more simply for understanding all the references to the Crimson King. The Author is Steven Erikson, and this series is called The Malazan Book of the Fallen This series is EPIC!!!!! I read a lot of books and this series, hands down is among the greatest I've ever read. Highly recommended in my opinion. Anyways, without any further delays, this is the entire series in chronological order :) Gardens of the Moon The Deadhouse Gates Memories of Ice House of Chains Midnight Tides The Bonehunters Reapers Gale Toll the Hounds Dust of Dreams The Crippled God There is another series of the Malazan Book of the Fallen by another Author named Ian C Esslemont, decent, but nowhere near the calibre of Steven Erikson's novels. Ummm Night of Knives? I think, cant remember the second book, but the Third is Stoneweilder Jim Butcher has 2 series: The Dresden Files (wizard who investigates for Chicago PD and runs his own business), and The Alera Codex (kind of like if you took ancient Rome and added Avatar: The Last Airbender's concept of bending but instead of it just being elements they're elemental furies that people can commune with).
Melannie Rawn's Sunrunner stuff (straight up fiction, magic, dragons, romance, political intrigue) is good as is Naomi Novak's Temeraire stuff (a reimagining of the Napolianic War if dragons were real, existed, and were the aerial forces of this war). Probably will end up reading the rest of the series... I have this thing about starting storys (games/movies/books) and then having to finish them or it gnaws at me... still a little bit butt hurt about (not sure if this is even worth a spoiler but) Asura.Katniss said: Bismarck.Nevill said: Lakshmi.Kolvar said: Bismarck.Nevill said: Asura.Katniss said: Lakshmi.Kolvar said: I am constantly reading, mainly fantasy books, but I read any good book really. King's best work imho is his non horror (shawshank redemption, the body, Eyes of the Dragon, The Langoliers and the Sun Dog from 4 past midnight)... i loved needful things and the dark half also... The Complete Tales of Winnie-The-Pooh by A. A. Milne
![]() Here it is, Yomi!!! It required a bit of digging, but I found it!
/cheer Anyway, I'm looking forward to this... ![]() Since it's late and I'm too lazy too describe it...Copy/Paste to the rescue. Caitsith.Zahrah said: » Asura.Chuuuuu said: » i dont even know what ur talking about lol Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis. Her daughter released tapes she made after her husband's assassination. It's pretty interesting. I've been pining for the release of this book for a week now. This may be the wrong venue, but here's more info. There's been a lot of bad press about what she's had to say about Ike and Mamie Eisenhower, Lyndon Baynes Johnson, Richard Nixon, Charles DeGaulle, Indra Ghandi, etc... Add Churchill to that list! Oh, I was close! XD I actually started watching the ABC special after you posted this. Got me interested in the book. :)
I have a confession to make. I'm a history nerd. LOL!
I love history, I just have a problem with remembering dates. Drives me insane! But I still like learning about it. Actually, one of the reasons I wanted to bump this thread was for suggestions about books on Greek Mythology. (might be myths, but still a part of history!! :x)
Pretty damn good zombie(ish) book.

(might be myths, but still a part of history!! :x) Ooooo...That is an interesting subject. I love mythology too! This is a great one... ![]() It's not necessarily a book about mythology, but it's more a novel about the Olympian gods in modern times. As far as Greek Mythology goes, you really can't go wrong with the Iliad and the Odyssey. http://greekmythology.com/ has some nice information as well.
Patricia Briggs has written some of the best supernatural themed books I've read in a long time. Werewolves, fey, vampires (that don't sparkle) and other oddities live in the Tri-Cities area of Washington state in a rather believable way. If you want to read some fun, salacious, and sometimes gruesome stories about various monarchs there's this...
![]() I can't tell you how many times I've read this. I think I was fifteen or sixteen when I first picked this up. It's been ages since I've read it, but I remember it being very good. Likes to play with the mind.
![]() Oh yes yes, you guys are making me happy. MOAR! :3
Im currently on the last book of the Hunger Games and I LOVE it! :)
This is one of my favorite biographies...Who doesn't love a complete nut-case on Dexedrine?
![]() (But seriously, it's a good chronicle of her marriages and career. Drugs and all.) If you're into something dark... ![]() ![]() Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter!
Bumping so the day posters can get in on this!

Truly good books. |
