The Secret World
As much as I dislike Kuroganashi (that post is disturbing :|), I'm glad this got bumped so I could find out about it. This looks sweet as hell.
Looks good, but its EA, so you never know.
Shiva.Viciousss said: » Looks good, but its EA, so you never know. Those CGI trailers are magnificent, they portray the game as unique, original and full of suspense. Unfortunately when I saw the gameplay videos I realised the CGI trailers may aswell have been for a completely different project. The thing is that the designers are making all the same promises that every other MMO makes before release then fails to deliver on expectation and tbh, it looks like it plays like every other mmo. This has potential, there is no doubt about that with it being set in a world completely original to any other MMO and a theme that goes down a new path compared to standard magical sword slashing MMO, but from watching those videos and hearing the promotions, I can't help but feel I've seen it all before. I think Star Wars Old Republic taught us that you can make amazing CGI trailers, but thats not really indicative of anything when it comes to an MMO. Not to say SWTOR isn't good, but all of those trailers didn't do near as much for the game as the beta did.
My browser is being stupid so I can't really watch the videos that well, but is this another point and click MMO?
Not that there is anything wrong with that. But it seems like they missed an opportunity for an action MMO that could have been awesome. If I'm going to be shooting a gun, let me aim it and shoot it. Don't make me click on an enemy then click the shoot button. If it is like that, then apologies. ![]() Beta weekend #4 approaching rapidly! 1 1/2 days until it opens again :D!
I was psyched for this game when I saw the first 2 trailers released.....
that was 4 years ago,in 2008. Since then the game vanished for a while and drastically changed, and everytime I saw it,it looked progressively worse. Now that I know a while back EA have a hand in it...... Pass I am in the beta.
Screw this game, seriously. maybe as F2P, but... no whats wrong with it? Just curious :x
For a p2p game its way too bad.
It has a positive side as well, but i'm gonna start with the bad things: Those stiffy animations in both outside of battle and during battle, the surprisingly small amount of weapon choices (for a game that lives from its weapons it is a poor amount). Boring battle system, can kinda be compared to GW2, but with 3 close range weapon types, 3 ranged and 3 magic. Its pure skill-clicking, no need for any positioning or need to evade. Enemies a standard. Black human-type monsters mainly with a few bigger versions. Story is confusing, you kinda black-out and you're in a subway station with a few other npcs, not knowing what to do (this was already the secret world, which didnt look any different, it was more like an instanced "dungeon"). That station didnt even look any different than a normal one, thats not what i would expect from getting into this secret world. Quests are still skipping over any text and just complete the quests. Moving on to the positive things: The setting is really nice, starts off with the music and a good opening scene. Very well done. But thats it I dunno how much you played but it isn't that bad imo.
I like the dodge system. When something starts powering up an AoE or Dodgeable attack a marker appears where it will hit and it'll be animated somehow so you know how long you have. If you double tap a movement key you do an epic roll in that direction and (hopefully) out of the attack. They do hurt, so dodging is definitely worth while. I haven't really kept up on GW2 so I can't speak to its combat system but its more like SWTOR (at least Jedi Knight, which is what I played). You have skills that generate resources and skills that consume them. Some require X amount, some add extra hits for extra resource marks, stuff like that. The monsters are varied. You fight black-shadow things in the subway for like the first 5 minutes of the game, but past that and into the first real zone there are a few types of undead (ghosts, zombies, more demon-y things), golems, and dudes in suits. My quests didn't skip over text *shrug* There are only 9 weapons in the three types but I really liked the ability system. You get AP fairly quickly which you can spend on any skill tree you like. Its really customizable and switching weapons for cool combos during fights makes me feel like a badass. The story is that basically the three factions are trying to take over the world while saving it from all the freaky evil ***. The title doesn't reference some kind of literal other world as it does the other side of the one we live in where there are zombies and hell hounds and stuff. I think its pretty fun. I was contemplating getting it but with all this Vanafest excitement FFXI might draw me back in -.- Been playing this and I actually enjoy it. I dunno who doesnt love killing zombies but i sure do!! very different and glad its different than other mmos
Its a fun game. Put like 40 hours into it. Gave up though was beta and I personally don't think its worth the monthly charge. Enjoyed the beta though. Back to one of my many other games...
Ew it has a subscription? Thought for sure this would be F2P...
totally not worth it
Based on all of the MMOs that have launched in the last two years, and where they are at now, none of them are worth a sub fee.
F2P model is pretty much superior in every way... I don't know why they keep releasing games that have sub fees. Some of them are even more perplexing by having F2P-style cash shops and sub fees.

I kinda like what GW2 did. 1 Time fee, box charge. No monthly fee. That's totally acceptable.
So can someone explain how pvp works in this game?
i dont care if its good or bad, just curious what its like Zackan said: » So can someone explain how pvp works in this game? i dont care if its good or bad, just curious what its like There's Battlegrounds and a world vs world area that's just the same server's three factions fighting for keeps forever. There's no real world pvp, it's like gw2 where all the pvp is in a persistent zone and bg's. The 1 shotting COMPLETELY ruins everything though. Shiva.Viciousss said: » 14.99. And its EA. Not like I was superinterested..the trailers were awesome but the gameplaye videos...meh. I'll pass. So after this playing this game for a while now (I am about QL6 average, questing in Blue Mountain.) I will give some discussion.
Combat: On average mobs you will probably spam a chain of Skills via the hotbar. This does get monotonous. On harder mobs though you have to stay on your toes. You still spam your chain, but you have to be constantly moving, strafing, dodging.. paying attention to mechanics (an aoe where you need to hug the mob, platforms catching on fire so you need to move to another, etc) Bottomline... Average mobs= Monotonous, grindy //Boss mobs = Very fun Story: The genre is Horror/Conspiracy. Funcom did a very good job here. 90% of the quests are entertaining and you dont mind repeating them. Investigation missions are fun.. Especially if you dont cheat out of them. By now you can find any answers with a quick google/youtube church which is unfortunate. However if you actually do the research without just trying to find 'solution to quest' it makes for an interesting twist. Faction Quests: Faction quests are specific to a single character, no changing allegiance. You rank up as you go on. Basically you goal is to hit a certain high threshold of xp. you then rank up. Certain ranks require a quest to further upgrade. Upgrades unlock perks. And they are also a good sight indicator for how advanced someone is. Btw Illuminati = Blue coat with gas mask, Templar = Red Long shirt, Dragon = Green cloth shirt with Scarf Level up system: There are no classes, though I am willing to put money that within a month or 2 the community will have roles dictated. Instead of classes you have 3 magic, 3 melee, 3 ranged. They have 2 tier 1 each(Offense or Defense) and 6 Tier 2(varied in roles) As you play you have a Static XP bar that never changes. Every 1/3rd you get AP and every full bar you get a SP. Gaining bars gets easier as you go on. The reason is because the amount of Exp it takes never changes, but you gain more and more exp as rewards as you progress in the game. Unlocking skills gets progressively more expensive though. The most expensive skill cost 50 AP. SP is used to rank up your skills. They vary from each of the 9 'weapons' to head, major, and minor talismans(these are your armor) There are 10 ranks, and the ranks cost there level to unlock minus 1. For example to unlock rank 5 you need 4 skill points, to unlock rank 10 you need 9 skill points. Gear: Your 'level' in this game is called a QL(Quality Level) This is basically the level of the gear you are using. In order to use QL5 gear you need to have that SKILL unlocked to that level minus 1. Example: Hammer skill 4= QL5 gear can be equipped. To play the game you need to buy the box game, set up a subscription and it does have an item shop. However the item shop is just clothing for your character to wear. Despite what others have to say, EA is not involved in the game, this is Funcoms game. And funcom seems to be doing this game right. I have been looking for a game that is like FFXI and this is the closest game to it(not counting ffxiv). These are the similarities in my eyes: The class system... FFXI has 20 jobs, soon 22. All these jobs can be played on one character. In TSW you will probably wind up having a large amount of acceptable combinations. All playable on one character. The story is top notch, this is where the focus is. PvP.. meh.. unfortunately you do need this to get good 'ql 10 ' weapons. Anyway there you go. If i have to give it a rating i will say 5/10.. only because I am indecisive and thats as neutral as I can get. First monthly patch released.
Bug fixes New dungeons 7 new missions= clothing reward Game wide AH released ![]() http://www.thesecretworld.com/news/update_notes_issue_2_digging_deeper_game_update_1.2
Issue 2 has been released. Highlights: Rocket Launcher released: Auxillary weapon, you can equip 1 active and passive auxillary ability at a time. 8 will be released eventually, but still limited to 1 each. Abilities cost 50 ap each and about 35 SP to unlock its use. New Missions: Most missions are investigative in nature Lair Upgrades: New changes include-> obvious warning your entering a lair, mobs have a slightly improved drop rate, and drop better gear. Regional bosses drop a bag that refunds some of its blueprints. Can do missions that require 'kill x mobs' for a reward of your choice of blueprint for that area. Nightmare Dungeons: Dungeons 6 and 7(of 8 ) Got there Nightmare versions released. --------------------- Overall: an effective update. Lairs and Rocket Launcer are the big deals. However, I can't recommend this game wholeheartedly to Hardcore players. Casual players will enjoy it. I love the game, it is just having big time growing pains. For you hardcores wait 6 more months. http://www.thesecretworld.com/news/issue_3_the_cat_god_now_live
Issue 3 Released. The short time frame allows Funcom to get there monthly updates back on track. Its a rather small update but it is to be expected. Summary: Pre patch for the Halloween seasonal events(if any game has the potential to have an awesome HALLOWEEN event it is this game) 2 missions added. More missions for Lairs added. Hints at a jet pack, more outfits, and more lair updates |
