Do you mean the discovery edition? Isn't there a level restriction set on that? You can play for free by buying chronoscrolls, but all your gold is probably going towards failed enchants anyways.
I'm not entirely sure for the NA version, but I play EU so it could be different :)

I think I might continue enjoying the game even more if the FFXI community stays away. lol

I only decided to play tera since ffxiv went down, but now I'm completely hooked on it, the combat is pretty unique for an mmo (as far as my knowledge of mmos go anyway lol).
--------------
It's definately worth a try to those who haven't played before however.

I think it's worth saying also if anyone played PSU and liked it, they'll probably like TERA's combat system too.

I saw the F2P announcement the other day. My comment was more towards the mention of a current free trial.
In the end, Tera has great gameplay and graphics, but once you max your level, there's not much variety of things to do. It may seem unfair to compare it to games that have been out for 10 years, but that's going to happen. There is a big content patch that will be coming out (hopefully) sometime this year, and that should hopefully provide more to do than just grinding the same dailies, running the same dungeons, and failing the same enchants.
Oh, and nexus should never have been implemented.

DEFINITELY worth the purchase if it's going F2P. It is one of the most immersive MMO out there atm.
Like Aleste said, often I found myself just exploring and taking screenies if is so beautiful. Here's an album I put together whilst exploring the free trial!

What happens when you go past level 15? I took a char to 60 only to realize endgame essentially consisted of running the same 3 instances hundreds of times to feed their horrible casino-enchantment system.
That, and the community was dogshit. Has the game since improved? I haven't checked into it deeply, but I'm guessing there's a reason they are down to three servers.

I honestly felt like it was the least immersive MMO I'd ever played. It didn't have zones, it had paths, and as soon as you tried to leave a path to explore you were met by a poorly contrived artificial wall.
Combine with that the fact that the text seemed to be written for the next button, and the game seemed to have next to no immersion at all.
By Rhaokin 2013-01-10 13:02:29
Invisible walls are hardly a hinderance, I've gotten on top of the tallest mountain in the game, took about 20min of climbing.

I mean, I appreciate your sense of exploration, but at the end of the day, it doesn't change the fact that the zones are approximately the size of KORPG's penis. Going places you weren't intended to is fun, but I wouldn't place it in the immersion category.
If you're into theme park games as opposed to sandbox, I suppose I can see the appeal.
By Rhaokin 2013-01-10 13:26:10
Well IRL theme parks are more fun than sandboxes.
Also if we're using analogies to describe MMOs, I'd use "desk job" or "scratchoff tickets" to describe FFXI.

Scratchoff tickets to describe FFXI?
When you get to the point where you need to masterwork a weapon in Tera, and then get it to +12, think about what feels more like a scratchoff ticket, FFXI or Tera.
At least in FFXI you can get a useful weapon by running dynamis on a daily basis. It may take time, but you see your progress. I have to agree on the desk job description though.

My sentiments exactly. In ffxi, you intelligently choose specific events because you've intelligently selected gear.
In tera, a scratchoff ticket really is the perfect way to describe their enchant system.
Beyond that, selecting gear in XI requires some level of intelligence/research. Anyone with 11 IQ knows to aim for a higher iLevel in Tera. The only thing required is pure, unadulterated grind. That or money poured into the cash shop.
In FFXI, I've always loved the fact that an intelligent person with mediocre gear that understands game mechanics can perform better than a stupid person with a collection of hard to get items. In Tera, it truly is he who grinds/spends the most triumphs.
By Rhaokin 2013-01-10 13:47:07
You're right, should compare 4-8 month grinds to a couple days of work. >_>
Also my "scratchoff ticket" analogy wasn't entirely a reference to luck getting items, but mostly how fun the game is. (it isn't after a while, it's just something you have to continue wasting your time on to try and get something to show for it)

Like I said, at the time I left tera, endgame was running the same 3 instances literally hundreds of times. That's way, way more mind-numbing than xi, which has sky, sea, salvage, salvage2, ein, ein2, dyna, aby, vw, neo-nyzul, Leigion and much more, and all of it is relevant to some extent.
FFXI absolutely trounced tera in the "stuff to do" category at the time I left.

Did I say farming dyna currency?
By Rhaokin 2013-01-10 13:52:27
Getting a relic involves farming dyna currency, you don't just disregard *** and acquire relics. (not even level 75 ones)
and if you do, because you're *that* hardcore, then do it right and get a 99 Kogarasumaru.

You need 3+ players to take down ADL.
Incidentally, I haven't seen you address the point that there's really nothing at all to do in Tera, which is too bad because I was curious to see if the game had changed.

Smart remarks aren't really addressing the points raised :/
If you want to say you just prefer tera for your own deep personal reasons, great, but none of the complaints you've raised about FFXI have been valid, and I'm pretty sure the ones I've raised about Tera have a basis in fact.

Btw, masterworking and +12ing a weapon is not a "couple days of work."
Unless you're lucky, which was my point in the first place.

I suppose you could do it pretty quickly if you took the p2win route. Of course, at that point, you literally are doing a desk job to win at tera.
Anyone here planning on playing this game when it comes out?! :D
Closed beta is happening right now for those who pre-ordered it.
