The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past sequel coming to Nintendo 3DS this holiday
Nintendo will release a new Legend of Zelda game for Nintendo 3DS based on the world of A Link to the Past later this year, the company announced today. A sequel to the Super NES original, the game will feature new mechanics, including the ability for Link to become a 2D drawing and move along walls.
Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, says the 3DS sequel will "reinvigorate the flat 2D world of A Link to the Past with a sense of height and volume" by utilizing the stereoscopic 3D capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS. The game, which does not have a final title in North America, will feature "an original storyline and all new dungeons."
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2, as the game is titled in Japan, will be released sometime this holiday in North America and next year in Japan.
A video of the game will be available to download from the Nintendo 3DS eShop later today.
Update: Nintendo confirmed that the new Zelda game set in the world of A Link to the Past is being developed by series producer Eiji Aonuma and his team at Nintendo EAD.

Too bad it's not a remake, but a sequel is the next best thing.
A Link to the Past is my favorite Zelda title.

here's more details on the new zelda from ign
A new Zelda game has been announced for the Nintendo 3DS.
The first details of the game were released during today's Nintendo Direct broadcast. It is set in the same world as the 1991 SNES classic A Link To The Past, and is not just a 3D remake of that game.
Hyrule has a similar look and feel, but the new Legend of Zelda game (it doesn't yet have a subtitle) will heavily incorporate the handheld's 3D screen to its gameplay, especially the notion of depth and height. Footage shown during the Nintendo broadcast depicted Link being hurled up in the air towards the player, avoiding obstacles.
Interestingly, Link also has the ability to transform into a crude 2D drawing. When Link activates this ability the perspective of the game changes, switch to a side-on view as Link walks along walls like moving graffiti. Link also benefits from other perks while inhabiting this form – he can now slip through narrow gaps and between the iron bars of a jail cell.
No official date or subtitle was announced for the new 3DS Zelda title but it will be released in time for the 2013 holiday season. A special trailer will be made available on the Nintendo eShop, showcasing the game in all its three-dimensional livery.

imo the way ign worded it wasnt like a sequal. they even go as far as only saying "link to the past inspired".
"A brand-new 3DS Zelda game has been announced. Inspired by A Link To The Past, NOT a remake!"

I cant use the 3D on the 3DS it hurts my eyes (I AM AWARE YOU CAN TURN IT OFF), but why waste the money when I cant use the component it was made for? 3D is a stupid trend anyway.

The Dark Overworld Theme is one of my favorite video game themes of all time, I'm highly doubting there will be a dark world in this sequel seeing how we already restored it? This is probably the second most anticipated game for me since they announced StarCraft 2!

Hmm, Nintendo, you better not Fubar this.
Also, that green bar reminds me of the stamina system in Skyward Sword. Urrrghjjjjjjjjkffffffffffff
Anyway, looking forward to this immensely. It's about time they showed A Link to the Past some love, what with it being the formula they've been using for Zelda for the past 21 years(Except for you, Majora's mask. You were special... and you Gameboy releases usually.).

i never use 3d myself but i find the 3ds far better than the ds. the dashboard is pretty nice, not as good as vita but gets the same ***done, from downloads to apps.
the 3ds to me is very much worth your money, even if just for a handful of games, for me those games are zelda oot and star fox, soon to be the new pokemon and zelda.

I cant use the 3D on the 3DS it hurts my eyes (I AM AWARE YOU CAN TURN IT OFF), but why waste the money when I cant use the component it was made for? 3D is a stupid trend anyway. 3D technology has been around since 1915, this isn't something that is new, and has become much easier to develop over the past 10 years. Companies are continually pushing for advances in 3D technology, and have produced 3D TVs, computer monitors, gaming systems and handhelds, even internet browsers. Next gen consoles will support 3D TVs, games will be developed with 3D in mind, and it will continue to flood the market spreading wherever companies can push it.
3D technology isn't just going to go away now, it's going to be based on your eyes and if you can handle it or not. If you can and you enjoy it then you have the technology to enjoy it, if you can't then you can use the same technology and just turn 3D off. You're either going to be someone that can handle it or you can't, and based off of that you can pick what you'd like to watch or play.
I personally enjoy watching 3D movies, it doesn't hurt my eyes and I don't get headaches from watching it. However, many people I know prefer 2D over 3D because it does hurt their eyes and they do get headaches. Some people are going to love it, some are going to hate it, and it's as simple as how you react when you watch it.
I think it's a great idea, and I don't mind too much that companies are trying to make millions off of the technology. Though I think it's stupid how many 3D movies are coming out, and I refuse to go see a movie if it has "3D" in the title.
