Final Fantasy VII To Release on Playstation 4

During the Playstation Experience event today, Square Enix Producer Shinji Hashimoto announced that Final Fantasy VII, the game that players wanted to see remade for almost two decades, will return on Playstation 4. As a port.
This is the PC version of Final Fantasy VII, which includes upscaled graphics for the new hardware, but note that this is not an HD version or a remake. That's really sad. I know a lot of us want a remake.

Cant you just buy it on psn? Also the pc version i had 10 years ago had midis instead of mp3 for all the music. Really terrible.

They always said they would never remake FFVII until they made a game that would surpass it. I can't see that ever happening, so I never expect a remake. Pretty new graphics don't make a game, the novelty would soon wear off.
Edit: I would prefer a FFVI remake (like they did with FFIV) before seeing FFVII remake. That would be sick. 2D to 3D is a big difference. FFVII would need real life looking graphics (staying true to the story and battle system) to be worth making, and that would take many years for a team to complete.

I prefer the 2D sprites and backgrounds to 3D. The DS/3DS graphics they'd use would probably ruin the style a bit

No I played FFIV and had a lot of fun with it. I started playing the PC version of the remake a few months ago and i'm loving it.
I cleared FFVI a couple of years ago, but I would gladly play it through again if they remade it like they did FFIV. The game is epic and it deserves some epic cgi cutscenes and cool looking espers.

Do not need a remake. Wish this ***would stop already. Instead of using old games that they actually put thought into to make money by making "remakes" they should just *** focus on making a new game that doesn't suck.

Totally agree. I ain't cleared a final fantasy since FFX-2. Which was really disappointing. Tried to complete FFXII but I got bored near the end. FFXIII is alien to me, way too automatic. Never got the chance to play XIII-2. I am hoping that FFXV is a beast and is worth completing. The games went downhill after the company became SquareEnix. Squaresoft > SE

Yeah :( XII was okay at best. I did XIII/XIII-2 but really didn't enjoy them, enough so I didn't bother with Lightning Returns. I'm actually replaying FFIX on my PS2 right now and still love it. "Graphics" and all.

Another port is just a slap in the face to people who like the franchise and are treated like their dollars belong to SE for having made good games a decade ago.

have to consider the production budget for something like that. sure, it seems like they'd make boatloads of money for making a super HD, fully voice acted, spruced up (let's be frank, some game mechanics needs to change too) FFVII for PS4, but you also need to consider that the target audience for such a thing isn't really as big as most people make it out to be in today's gaming economy.

I mean, that's how I feel a remake would be, is a slap in the face just to get money. I didn't bother buying X/X-2 "remakes" for the same reason. Just benefiting off old games that actually did well. Will they make bank? Yes, duh. Is it smart on their end? Of course. Do we still feel like we're being screwed? Yeah, big time. I'd rather something new and fresh that I could enjoy, not "oooh, pretty graphics on a game I know everything about."

Yeah I wanted a fresh FFVII experience, so instead of waiting 20 years for a remake, I downloaded the PC version and got some mods. Gjoerulvs hardcore mod was really exciting and added new bosses which tested me to the limit. I never did get round to killing Sephiroth, but I had a lot of fun playing that with the mods. Graphics were redone so you don't get the blocky nature. If people realized this they might not ask for a remake as much.
Edit: Also they only make these ports because that is what happens for anything, whether its television, music, or games. All media has to be updated to fit into the current gen, even if those ports don't bring anything new, at least you can play a game that was specifically ported for the console. They ain't trying to squeeze money out of it, they just want to ensure people that if they want to relive the old days with a newly ported version on the PS4, then they can. The rest of us will just download the pc version for nothing, if we ain't already cleared the game x298479202 times.

I'm not against porting old games since it gives a big opportunity to people to replay them and new generations to appreciate them. But then again, porting stuff to pc would be enugh, no reason to put every game through every goddamn console and system. But whatever, I don't really get this specific port which doesn't really have a reason for being on ps4 other than taking advantage of people with holes in their pockets(which I guess it's still a smart move from a business standpoint, albeit annoying).
Call me again when there's new announcements about Bravely Second and FF Explorers, that's the SE I like to hear about!

Haha, yeah that's how I feel. I own the game on PSX and have a perfectly functioning PS1/PS2 I can play it on. I really don't need another fancy port for it.

They made one that surpassed it before they even made it! FFVI. Then after they made VII they made a meh one then the BEST one. IX.
They should have remade VII so long ago if they kept their word!

Speaking of the first installation, although the second is quite similar, the game isn't automatic where it counts. You could play like that on trash mobs and some bosses (and get a low battle rating) but some bosses, and the endgame content, take quite a bit of input from the player.
The story, typically being the main reason most people play Final Fantasy games, is mediocre, in my opinion
However, the gameplay and content, atleast where the first installation is concerned, and in my opinion, is solid.
A games story could be absolutely abysmal to me, but so long as the gameplay and endgame content is good, it's a sale for me. Just the way I am, really.

ppl throw around 'remake' a lot. FF7 should never be remade.
It should on the other hand be remastard. I would love a ff7 completely the same game play just with an update graphics and optional voice.

I always thought this comic summed up perfectly why FF7 will never be remade. The juxtaposition of high-fidelity graphics and 2 decade old gameplay would make for an absolutely terrible game experience.

Wanted to get a PS4 anyway, but yeah I knew about the pc version, but playing it on a console is so much more rewarding to me.
