In that picture, Phelps and his rival weren't actually fuming, but that's what it appeared to be. Those, according to various interviews since the picture was taken, are their "warm up" rituals.

Also, apparently someone got a tattoo of that "angry Phelps face".

Ryan Lochte robbed at gunpoint in Rio

This is a disgrace, thank God he and the other Olympians weren't killed, but its clear that the Olympics should have never been awarded to Rio. Diving into a green pool, or sailing in sewage is one thing, but athletes being robbed at gunpoint? Come on IOC. Get your act together.

I was reading the Rio 2016 wikipedia page, which had references to several news-stories of incidents affecting the various athletic teams, and sadly quite a few occurred...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concerns_and_controversies_at_the_2016_Summer_Olympics#Crime

...of course incidents occur at every Olympics, some more prominent (such as the bombing in 1996, et al) than others, but the repression of criminal activity in Rio was a big sticking point prior to the selection of the city, so it's bound to be a contentious issue.

All of the ones winning medals have pretty insane diets.

Not only are their diets insane, they are insanely strict, and have supervised training, with equally intense workouts that the average American doesn't do.

Strictly monitored to win the Olympics.

Rio should have never got the Olympics.

The entire thing smacks of unjust gentrification. Why host the thing in one of if not the most impoverished cities in the developed world? It's absurd.

They could have organized this in Paris and it would have been the same minus Zika.

We'd have offered Chlamydia in exchange, though.

I'm more shocked that a Judoka, whatever his background, doesn't shake hand than whatever happened (robberies etc). This guy deserves to lose his belt.

Despite Lavillenie's comparision, of how he was treated similar to Owens (Berlin 1936) by the audience last night, being historically incorrect, what do you think about the Brazilian behaviour throughout these olympic games?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concerns_and_controversies_at_the_2016_Summer_Olympics#Crime

...of course incidents occur at every Olympics, some more prominent (such as the bombing in 1996, et al) than others, but the repression of criminal activity in Rio was a big sticking point prior to the selection of the city, so it's bound to be a contentious issue.

Just to follow-up on this, due to inconsistencies in the stories of the swimmers involved, a Rio judge had issued a warrant to have them detained before their flights back home, pending further investigation into the case...

(Probably least-biased report here...)

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/aug/17/brazil-police-arrest-swimmers-jack-conger-gunnar-bentz-ryan-lochte-robbery-case-rio-2016

(Maybe slightly more sensationalised, given the ongoing nature of the developing story, but more-to-the-point reporting here...)

http://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/2016-rio-summer-olympics/u-s-olympic-swimmers-weren-t-robbed-fabricated-story-report-n633636

Apparently the inconsistencies involved eye-witness accounts that claimed the team-members were vandalising a local bathroom, and were subsequently held by local security guards, who then demanded (whilst using a brandished firearm) that they recompense for the damages caused--which counters the claim that the uniformed men were criminals who were mugging the athletes.

So the 'other' account of this is the pair were simply being 'ugly Americans' trashing the local venue, got caught in the act by extremely enthusiastic security forces, then made up a different account of the events which would be more sympathetic to a world audience. *sigh*

Well, its finally over.

Despite how the international press published Rio and Brasil most of time emphasizing our social problems, we really lived intensely this few weeks. Lots of stories and heroes arising out of nowhere.

Well, the party is over, after World Cup 2014 and Olympic Games 2016, back to our reality.
