For anyone interested in making their own HD mods: (it's a different method for zones, this applies to weapons, armors, monsters etc)

Download these:

Modelviewer: program to look at assets out of the game.

http://ffxidats.caarrie.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=1083

Changetex (this allows you to take images out of dats and put them back in)
http://ffxidats.caarrie.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=411

Gimp (a free photoshop clone)

https://www.gimp.org/

DDS plugin for gimp: (this is the image file type used for dats)

http://registry.gimp.org/node/70

Korith Tex tools to make the texture size allowance bigger in your dats. (this used to be done with hex editing, you no longer have to do this)

http://771.ignorelist.com:8080/mods/textool.php

Basic instructions:

Backup the dat you work on before starting.

Find the dat number in your model viewer (remember each race has a different dat, editing the weapon for human males will only work and showup for human males), drag and drop it to changetex and press the button on the right to save the image out as a dds. Open that in gimp, upscale the image to double or triple (keep the ratio the same, so if it's 128x256 keep it so that the the first is half the size of the 2nd dimension...256x512 or 512x1024 for instance), now use the paint tools in gimp to clean up the image and make it look better (this requires a bit of artistic talent but nothing crazy). Then save it as a new dds file (export as and type a filename with .dds at the end, save options of compression bc2/dxt3 and mimaps: generate mipmaps)

Goto Koriths website above, drag the dat onto the page and upgrade the size to the one you just saved out as. Save the dat from this process by clicking save.

In changetex, reload the newly saved dat into it so the dimensions now show to the increased ones. Press the button on the left and insert your newly made image into the dat (if changetex crashes it's because the image size and the allowed image shown do not match)

Rename the old dat as your original backup, put this new one in it's place and check it ingame.

If you have problems loading a dds into gimp (some have weird alpha channels) just use:

http://ffxidats.caarrie.com/index.php?topic=672.0

to convert it and then load that converted image into gimp. Still have to save it out as a dds.

Try to increase the sizes of the images without making them too big, too big is somewhat pointless and if you have enough hd dats it could cause fps issues.

As an additional, keep in mind that weapons that can be dual wielded have different dat numbers based on being in the main hand and offhand. This is due to different animations in the dat files. So if you wanted to change the look of a sword and want to change how it looks in main and offhand you have to update two dats (if doing for one race). You can find the numbers of both in altanaviewer by equipping it in main hand (write down the dat number at the bottom) and then equip in offhand (get 2nd number at the bottom of the screen).

Yeah it's really fiddly and annoying to do it for all.

They look great, thanks for making and sharing them.

Ill put them in the OP post.

I get asked a lot if system fonts can be made HD.

The character sheet can be made bigger but the game (in this instance) uses numbered pixel locations to cut the characters from the image. If you make the character sheet larger the game can't find the characters anymore and so will give you jumble, so these can't be made HD unless someone can find a way to change the pixel locations. (If anyone can prove me wrong, feel free to do so xD I tried for days)

This also applies to things like linkshell icon, bazaar, job master icons etc.

This way the game uses images was changed over the years for other systems in the game but remained in place for the UI. If Square ever release the updated UI they almost finished it might be something that's possible in the future.

For anyone interested in modifying zone dats.

The basic idea is the same as the guide I posted above, however instead of model viewer you use Noesis to look at the zone dats, just find the files on your hard drive and double click them to load the zones into the zone model viewer.

Most basic zone dats are in ROM/1

http://ffxidats.caarrie.com/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=1360

To export the textures you can either use Neosis or just put the dat into changetex and export them one at a time (there are a lot of textures to make a zone), I personally export them all one at a time to a folder via changetex (the images I am going to work on) but I also export everything via neosis just to see what each image is (I don't edit these images, these are just pngs I look at in folder view to see what is what).

For example, if you wanted to change a flower texture or grass you can do this in a matter of minutes by just modifying that one single texture and leaving all the rest as they are. The only real time consuming part of zone modding is if you want to modify a lot of textures or go for a full conversion.

Most everything else is the same as in the guide I posted above so look there for making allowed image sized larger etc. With zone dats you are far more likely to need to use graphics converter instead of just loading them directly into gimp (link to that also above)

Also keep in mind that alpha maps are important in zone editing.

Keep in mind that you don't need to hex edit anymore, thanks to Korith making new tools.

Edit:
This is my first DAT mod, so I thought I'd go for something easy.

Slightly improved homepoints and now crag crystals.

Crystals

Please update link as I consolidated the files.

Very nice, did a great job on these. Had a snoop at the texture. Korith is working on a tool to modify those pallette color images too (if anyone wants to do that, so could modify the glow effects etc), I'll post a link to it when it's ready.

For anyone wondering why the larger number of files, it's due to REMA having a glowing and non glowing version.

Awsome work from both/all of you. I already installed a few of those and they look great.

Almace would be nice ^^ or if possible that glowing sword from Aello ... Ephemeron? You can upgrade those weapons aswell? I always thought that the effect doesn't look that great like other glowing weapons.guess it's rather niche to have a hd model, but I like to style lock with one hehe
