Yes and no,
it is addictive but as much as it is that i find its not as fun as it used to be yet people dont seem to care anymore whether people are moving onto FF14 or not is another wonder but even so i feel its dying everyday people just dont seem to care whether you can get an xp pt or simply get along. This game just is not the same anymore. People would rather steal from a linkshell and then try and get people to back them up after the incident has happened, where is the fun in that?
Whatsmore is that people have the inniative to cuss their own shell that they depended on for such a long time after their success into getting the things they were after for awhile.
The good side of it is if you are capable of solo play, (NMs and such) then its fun just to mess about for a few hours before work etc).
Friends and so called friend that disappear into a linkshell full of bots/hackers/idontgiveashit types really puts you down.

I'm @ Sylph and it's only worth coming back to if you have fun with less people. If you have any big goals I dont think its worth it. If you just wanna run around and bug it out, maybe do Dynamis ~_^
Then yea !!!! lol, GL though.
People still suck, it's not as busy... but its still fun for me considering I have my friends / Family playing with me.

The big goals are debateable still...
Sorry if i gave you the wrong impression but its only what i have experienced i dont think this game is the same as what it was.
Its more like a war zone than anything else. Like the other day i did a Soboro Sukehiro run and went 0/4 the tank who wanted to pop popped his no drop then left i went all the way to windurst changed to a tank job then continued to tank everyones nm. Afterwards 6/8 people left with their weapon apart from Me and a Tarutaru yes we were not happy about the situation but we still ploughed on to help others.
I dont really care if i got the drop or not its a play toy to me than anything else but i do appreciate that other people appreciate that i did things for them and not ravage on that they only have 5 minutes before their on ls event that they cuss continuelsy about the same thing you said i was going to pop mine you didnt keep your word when i never said anything about a promise i said i would try to put you down sooner rather than later.

It all depends on your point of view on what you want to come back for. If you have a bunch of 75's and havent done all/any of endgame then hell yeah come back if nothing else to merit/gear pimp all your jobs. If you only comming back to level then i would just say hold off for the new one as you will be leveling anyways. I quit once and the only reason i came back is because of the endgame opportunities that werent open to me before. As long as you have something to do then you will like it. If you sitting in whitegate examining everyone then you will quit as fast as you come back.

well in my opinion no.
i got my account robbed by a very close person over the summer and i have to say even tho i miss ffxi alot i wouldnt go back to it.
This game made a huge impact on my life i met alot of people here and it was great fun thats why i miss it alot and i would love to come online and play once a week sometimes but i just decided to forget about it.
You have to look at yourself as well if your a young fella with school (i assume from the photo) i would recommend you to focus on school and friends as this game is a HUGE time waster it didnt affect me much since im almost in my thirties and i got a lil baby now but i see whats happening to the teenagers playing this game , they mess up their private lives and *** up the school , what you should do man is *** ffxi remove it from pc or burn your xbox CD and move on =P.

@ Machiaveli, Sorry for your loss man.
It is an addictive game no matter what the outcome its like you smoke some crack only to want more and more.
Many people want the best gearz only to outperform their rivals/everyone else at the game.
I work for a living and like to play this game alot still but i find that alot of people (idontgiveashit types) want to intimidate you at the game and find that aplauding.

Dead Game
Only people playing are the ones with friends, or the ones that are seriously addicted and think getting a peice of Armor in a virtual world is an achievement.

I just came back a couple days ago after quitting in June. It was somewhat of a disappointment seeing so few people around, but the boost to Campaign is definitely something that made it worth it for me. Many of my friends have left, but I still have close friends that stuck with it. I was taking advantage of the new solo/duo options available before I left as well, and coming back I have realized that there are even more available now. Even the new expansions reflect that.
Maybe its bad that everything has these solo options because its not really reflective of the original style of FFXI, but I find that I have a lot more fun being able to log on and actually do things and level without having to wait around for a party invite or a Dynamis to roll around.
I just rejoined and try to take the game a little less seriously and more as a boredom killer and not so much as a daily requirement.

I'm in the same boat as a few others, returned about a week ago and really only playing when a friend has something going on or I really have nothing to do. Getting out of the routine of daily events helps a bit and when I'm on I can actually do things I enjoy instead of feeling like I'm perpetually working on something or another. In this case the game's enjoyable and so far it feels worth it.

Wall of text inc.
Being only 1 year and half i play, everything is still new and exciting to me. Maybe i can refresh on your mind why u liked this game.
I play for the entertainment and the challenge to beat the game, and is stupid to say that if u want to achieve something, u are addicted. I like the atmosphere of the game, i enjoy most of the ppl i play with, and i perfectly know that most of them will just forget about me when i/they quit, and so i will forget them too. It's just a game, a challenge, where u meet ppl from all around the world, and who cares if they gonna vanish, enjoy the moment, talk about how is the weather in wisconsin and germany, do COP and get agry at every airship or mammet fail, and laugh at attempts to solo titan as BLU/THF (not me, bahahah). But then get happy and do tons of screenshots at every *** drop u get (dynamis xarca and salvage above all) and turn up the volume when u finally get final TOAU cs (that's rlly something) at 2 am after the most exciting final BC with the most awesome music <.< I exped thf and blm first and second, then i said "ok im gonn stop exping now". i exped brd because is shiny and cool (and merit). "ok now im gonna stop" and i'm exping pld to help a RL friend getting rdm to 75 (and because is shiny and the AF is so fashion...). guess what? I STILL ENJOY EXPING. except in valkurm noobs. i wanna meteor that place.
It's not addiction (i guess i've been rlly lucky with parties and now is easy to exp with level sync) it's just that i point something that i want, i play to get it. Dun care if im not gonna get morri legs before i quit <.< i still enjoyed the thrill of every SSR.
I know that this game is gonna leave to me good memories and some complaints, but nothing so negative like "it's a dead game" or "people sucks, ONCE UPON A TIME there was ffxi and it was a good game now <No, thanks.>"
Yes, it's a POTENTIALLY addictive game, but like someone said on a previous post, it's what u make it. Play it for the fun and not for 24h HNM overcamped by BOTS or a dalmatica +1 (and still sucks at playing after u get it!), and the game is gonna reward you with fun.

This. I did the same thing about 6 months ago (after quitting for 6 months) and took a much more casual attitude towards the game. No more endgame events, no more 10+ hours in sky, no more camping HNMs only to lose claim to a botting LS... and I have to say the game has never been more enjoyable. The game isn't dead, by any means, and I certainly hope the minority who feels that way shoves off to Aion or FFXIV (whenever it's released)

Ultimately, it's your decision, we don't all have the same ambitions, so, asking for an opinion--that's largely limited to a person's personal experience of FFXI--isn't going to do much.
Regardless, I'll say that I do not feel that the time I have spent on this game, over the period of 6 years, was justified. (not on FFXI or any MMO) I don't "blame" anyone but myself and my own destructive habits.

I am returning...lol I do this off and on...but for me since most players I have known over the years have either went to other mmorpgs or quit I play sollely for the hell of it ..I generate my own fun but I'm definitely leaving Bahamut but will leave my other char behind..never know tho it is wishful thinking Bahamut may open again.

I'm on Sylph, and I've been playing for almost five years now. I've taken temporary leaves due to work/school a couple times over the years, about six months each. Speaking from experience, the earlier times I returned very eager to catch up and to pick up where I left off, I leveled some jobs, did some endgame, and just played around a bit. I have a lot of real life friends who play, so it's always been easy to come back to something. Somewhat recently, I came back from about two or three months off, and it's gotten very slow from what it used to be, very obviously so.
Since I've been playing for so long, and I have a handful of 75's, (I don't wanna sound like a douche, but I like to consider myself a veteran player) I understand the game is dying, and have come to terms with it. I've decided I'm going to do some things I've been wanting to do forever, but just never really took the time to do ALL of them. I'm going to finally cap all of my [useless] combat skills and open that menu to a sea of blue, and I'm going to finally get Woodworking to 100. It's been 90+ for about fifteen months. I'm going to tie up some loose ends, maybe join a Dynamis shell for kicks, and finally do something I've wanted to do since I've started the game but never admitted to anyone -- level BST.
Damn, I didn't mean to take up this much space. I'll wrap it up. Basically, what I'm saying is, speaking from experience, I know almost first-hand what you're going through (to OP). I came back because it's been such a huge part of my life for such a long time, I'm gonna be with it until the end, and do all the little things I've been too busy to do before. If you're all about the sentimental things, and it's the little things you enjoy, then I say definitely come back and just kick back and ride the wave until it dies out. But if it's your desire to come back and level a new job and "p1mp 0ut g34rz" I would recommend staying away.
Whatever you decide to do, I'll see you in a little bit in Final Fantasy XIV! :D

You know what's awesome? When people share opinions through their own experiences thinking arrogantly that their thoughts and actions matter at all.
Don't come back to FF. Anybody who isn't 13 honestly shouldn't even be looking at MMO's anymore. Addictive? Not really. FF is merely an intrinsic reflection of ones' self worth. Anyone who has no goals or ambitions in life and claims this game is a good way to relax is just thinking up excuses for being a failure and a liar not only to everyone around them, but to themselves.
p.s. If this is an enjoyable job and means to an end in life, by all means, carpe diem, but otherwise; really?

Well being from Shiva myself, the game is far from dead.
I get party invites often, and there is a ton of endgame still going on.

'Tis the season, and I think we all know who the Grinch is.
OP: Sylph.Atnaas said: ...i just wanted some opinions on whether it is worth it...
Anyone with half a brain can give a mindless "Yes" or "No" opinion with no reasons backing them up whatsoever. But seeing as though I've been in something of a similar situation a few times as the OP, I thought it would be helpful to offer up my own experiences, as a sort of support for my opinion, especially since we're even on the same server. Back-story and personal experiences help validate opinions. As I've said, anybody can give a simple "Yes/No" response, but it's up to the person asking for the opinions to sort through all the *** and come to a suitable solution, and that's exactly what those experiences you referred to, Savain, are for.
And perhaps instead of ignorantly ridiculing everybody over 13 who plays FFXI (or any other MMO, for that matter), you could instead give some constructive advice, or take your keyboard warrior antics elsewhere.
And cool it with the big words. I don't know if my lying, failure of a brain can take it.

It depends on what your definition of "achievement" is.
I know people that define achievement as sitting around getting high and eating an entire bag of Doritos in 10 minutes.
