Wannabe 360 Hackers?

So what's with all the wannabe hackers on 360s that say something along the lines of "If you don't do <insert thing here> I'll flood your IP and make it so you can't get on the internet for <x amount of days/hours>"?

Now I know that's not technically hacking so much as something along the lines of DDOSing but I'm not great with the hackish world lingo.

My main question for this is what makes these stupid people think that they can DDOS attack/hack someone, while using a system made by MICROSOFT? If they were truely successful in their attempt, the repercussions would be nearly instantaneous. Not only would they have Microsoft on their asses for using information gained from wrong use of Microsoft's system in a hack attempt, but they would also have the FBI on them for attempting to hack in the first place!
