I just got done watching the entire animated series of Avatar: The Last Airbender and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it!!!
I have not seen the movie yet and am afraid too... there is just no way a hollywood movie could capture the HUMOR that made the animated show so entertaining... plus the "let's make everyone caucasian and blonde" is really tiring :(
If they where serious about the franchise they would make 1 long, lovingly made live action movie for each "book/chapter" of the series and a 4th movie for the finale.
The only halfway decent interpretation/adaptation from comic/anime/video game to movie was Watchmen. And even then, some parts were iffy if you were a devout fan of the comic.
The Japanese usage of the word otaku and the Western usage could not be any more different in implication.
"Geek" is not a terribly good translation because it has gradually lost its negative, "abject social failure" meaning in English, and has actually become a badge of pride in some circles.
No one would be caught dead going to something called "Otakon" in Japan. It would be like going to Pedokon.
I was optimistic about the movie even after everyone said it sucked. I wanted to like the movie, but after watching it for about 5 min, I was so sad. T_T The show was amazing, the movie was so awkward it's beyond words. Anyway, pic related.

Everything else has been extremely disappointing.
pfft Watchmen is one of my favorite movies, and we can say x-men:wolverine was also a good adaptation.
tbh I loved everything about both movies, specialy Watchmen, loved the kissing part.
avatar is kind of cartoonish anime... not pure anime.
Question is, is it a manner of culture or style/use of animation that differs between what we consider anime or a cartoon?
It's more culture than anything. show the said cartoon on japan, I believe they would see it as a mixture of anime/cartoon, and US seems to view it as anime.
tbh it has very little of anime, it's more cartoonish than anything.
it's just like that jackie chan show, and the animated version of x-men, not really anime but can be confused with it.

It's ironic. Geeks are known for their social inadequacy and awkwardness in a general and socially accepted norm. However, when massed, they kind of turn it on its back by making their own community so to speak. But if anything that's just a social circle which tends to show it's true nature of awkwardness to the general public.
I felt like the acting is what really made the movie suck. I was surprised with Aang's character though, I thought he was going to be the worst actor, but he ended up being the only one that I thought played the part well. What they should have done is had the Buchheimer direct it instead of freakin m night. Hes such a slob with is movies now its stupid.
It looks just like anime to me. The only thing that makes it not anime is that it's made by Americans? Are there other qualifications to separate a cartoon from an anime? I have no idea. :x
Edit: I thought the bending was cool to see, but it was so slow in some parts; almost hard to believe you could attack someone with it. o.o I thought the scene near the end where Zuko/Aang were fighting each other without bending (just martial arts) was the coolest fight scene of the movie. :O
The word "anime" in Japanese refers to all kinds of animation, not just JP animation. So the difference between a "cartoon" and an "anime" is purely a Western designation.
Last Airbender very definitely borrows heavily from Japanese anime art direction and style, but doesn't follow the standard serialized manga baseline plot progression. Nor does it suffer from (usually) Shuueisha editor-controlled fight pacing.
This makes it hard to categorize, but why does it really matter? =)
yup you got it zefiris. "anime" is meant for japanese cartoons only. just like manga means japanese comics.
usa is comics and cartoons. anime is not a term used for american cartoons =\ it's just wrong.

Was anyone seriously disappointed at the difference between the movie "The Last Airbender" and the anime?!
Seriously? I enjoy the whole live action thing but this movie seems like they wanted to rush through everything?!
Anyone remember that scene with the earthbenders when 5 of them were "bending" and a tiny rock just flew by the screen -____-;
See the video attached.
Edit: This is NOT my YouTube video.
I heard the creator of the show was on the set, but the Director (signs) would not listen to anything he said, because of this he left.
He probably was not doing what he wanted, or was not listening to him. He always ruins stuff, all he had was the sixth sense which turned out good. After that most of his work was not really good, I usually saw complaints about them. On top of that his directing style , and how he did not listen to no one on the Last Air Bender Set.
The movie sucked, it sucked, it sucked. It would have been better following the series. He changed so much stuff, I did not know what I was watching, I stopped in the middle of the movie.

Everyone should reconsider their opinion about this show since Stan is apparently very passionate about it.
