I say we sell Alaska to Canada and pay off some of the debt. Only stipulation is the Palins go with it.

On one hand, yes! But on the other, I wouldn't wish Palin on Canada. The Canadians are way too nice for that!

/shrug Other than bolstering conservative values in already highly conservative areas, I think Palin is mostly irrelevant at this point. Maybe that'll change in the future, but there are more influential people running around now.

She's just annoying. Like seeing advertisements for "Sarah Palin's Alaska" just make me want to puke.

Stop stealing my ideas. However, my raffle idea was completely for my individual profit. (with a percentage of the earnings going to fund education)

Isn't that what the lottery was supposed to be for? The education system?

It's called the lottery and they have multiple forms of it in every state.

What evil could come from more funds being dumped into the education system by feeding off of people looking to get rich quick?

Not in PA. The PA lottery pays for things for the elderly.

Now my thought on the matter.

You absolutely cannot simply blame this on Obama. How long did we know this could happen? And yet, democrats and republicans alike in Washington could do nothing but get into a pissing contest like children instead of making a swift decision to prevent it.

The leaders of this country are idiots that all need replacing.

Of course they can. Didn't you get the memo?

While a Republican is President, anything good that happens is because of his impeccable conservative policies; anything bad that happens is because Democrats are idiots.

While a Democrat is President, anything good that happens is because of the Republicans' impeccable conservative policies; anything bad that happens is because Democrats are idiots.

Geesh, get with it. /s

The conservative element of our population that does not believe enough in a public education that will put politicians in office that will willingly gut it for their own personal means.

Perhaps over dramatized but someone would find better use for the money than going to our education system.

Both parties are childish towards the other. If they would concentrate less on slinging poo towards each other and concentrate more on actually doing something for the country, we might have this economy problem fixed already.

Not to ***in anyones cornflakes but honestly open ur eyes and blame the real person behind this mess u guys have to deal with and we all know it aint obama it was ur best friend mr bush.

Obama is trying to do the right thing by opening everyones eyes on the situations in the us and everyone blames it all on him lol.

Being a canadian I can say thanks to retards like bush the world will suffer with the us being in a disaster like this. That's why china is getting in there and telling them to smarten up.

Just my 2 cents if anyone takes offence to this then ur just to blind to see the truth behind what really happened.

Not like the health care plan had anything to do with it. no compromise there. just wanted it out and be the one in the record books for doing something about the health care system. money sink right there.

Could someone please link me to the article where obama was signing all the cheques for the last 10 - 15 years?

Do some of you really, really really think that all this is just from his running of the us government and the debt crisis purely happened in the last year??

Really???

I just have a hard time coming to grips with the stupidity of some of you.

I find it interesting that while many people lay the blame with either the pres. or a certain party they fail to realize that it takes a whole country to get itself into this mess in the first place. Why do its citizens get 450k mortgages when they only make 40k a year? Why do they take out huge lines of credit and rack up huge credit card bills they can never pay for?? Granted the financial institutions made it easy but ppl need to take part of this blame also and shouldnt be shouldering it onto the government without doing their part also.

This has been going on for a long time. the us needs to stop lending other countries so much money with very little coming back in. I only pointed out the health care plan because it`s hurting the people more then helping.

It really is the party of "NO's" fault on this you simply can not balance a budget on spending cuts alone.

Funny some what related story, I am saving up for my wedding next year, so we aren't going out as much, use coupons at the supermarket etc.., i.e. Spending cuts, but I am also perusing freelance work (I'm a graphic designer) because in addition to freeing up more money to save with spending cuts, we are also raising more revenue at the same time.

but OH NO's you can't tax the "job creators" because not like they haven't had the same tax breaks for the past decade and have been systematically removing jobs from our shores to other countries.

And honestly spending cuts are the worse thing we can do at a time of recession, we may need to do individual cuts to certain programs but we should actually still spend the money. We have a rapidly decaying and outdated infrastructure in this country, all those major highways we built in the early part of the last century are slow decaying, our data communication is rapidly failing behind other developed country's, we need new bridges built and other large GOVERNMENT projects.

No private institute is going to redo the major freeways without a government bill. or rebuild bridges etc etc..

Our money that we spend on these types of programs goes directly to the source of our economy, consumerism. Without these types blue collar jobs, middle America doesn't go out to the ball game as much, they don't buy that new TV etc..

No. We've had a string of pretty poor governments. Even for that short time there was a budget surplus, there wasn't exactly a shortage of wasteful spending.

But, stupidity? Now it's my turn to say really "Really???" You act like the argument for a responsible government is a new thing. It's not. It's been there for as long as I can remember.

But nevermind that, even. What would you have us do? If you'd like, we could start threads about every US administration's handling of XXXXX issue. But, blaming people for the sake of making you happy doesn't do anyone any good. So, instead, we look to the current administration to fix things.

That's why this is about Obama, and not Bush. Or Clinton. Or Bush, Sr. Or Reagan. Or Carter. Get it?

It's not building interstates or bridges that's the problem. It's things like "US Aid Money" being the number one thing on some countries' list of revenue. And forget Iraq. WMD's or no, lies or no, the war was and continues to be prosecuting extremely poorly and wastefully. And, wasteful spending in other areas is ALWAYS still a problem.

It's THOSE kinds of things.

But you're right - blanket cuts are stupid.

Was watching a special report about this on CNN last night. S&P cited that one of the main reasons they downgraded the credit score was because of the constant party bickering in congress. To just about all of you who posted above who are pointing fingers at the other side, yeah you guys are the problem. People now-a-days are so arrogant about their views that they aren't willing to compromise or consider anything else. This applies to both sides. It's not really any presidents fault so much as congress for not being able to compromise and work out a deal. Furthermore, according to the report, the credit downgrade won't really hurt our economy that much unless we let it. If consumers get scared because of this and stop buying stuff then business will make less money and hire less people, cycle etc.

Edit: also I think someone above mentioned renovating our infrastructure which I think is a wonderful idea. I think it would be great if Obama followed DNR's example and started making lots of government projects to fix infrastructure, etc which would pump in a lot of jobs which would encourage more spending and help boost the economy.
