Did ff16 flop?
By Ovalidal 2026-04-25 14:27:17
All FF games have had one thing in common, they were all aimed at teenagers. ff16 went against this.
This is as dumb as making a game of thrones inspired mario rpg or pokemon
I actually appreciate the M-rating of FFXVI. It's a big risk, doing that. Cuts down on advertising opportunities, and they managed (imo) the most interesting single-player setting in the series. Though, I think the reason I like the setting so much is because 90% of it is literally taken from Chains of Promathia.
What I think really holds the story back is it's handling of characters. Everyone who is good in the story is "good" in the same way, if that makes sense. To compare FFXVI's characters to Chains of Promathia, there is just WAY more depth in CoP. Selh'teus is good, but he's also triggering a genocide by Emptiness in the Outlands. This is why we help him sometimes but we (Prishe) stop him other times. Bahamut is bad because he plans on killing everyone, but we learn he's actually the biggest homie of FFXI in the epilogue.
Why is everyone who supports Clive's views on Bearers also supportive of the whole "destroying Mothercrystals" thing? If this was a FFXI storyline, Cid/Clive would have triggered a civil war in the hideout when he went public with his plans of destroying mothercrystals. Almost every ally in FFXVI's story is cartoonishly good, and many enemies are cartoonishly evil.

XVIs music was unforgettable? That’s gotta be a hot take haha.
Unforgettable?
No, I said " very forgettable, a lot of it wasn't great, which is odd considering the music in XIV is usually very memorable.
There's likely a lot of factors in it. I'm nearly sure the composer was going through cancer treatment at the time.
My bad autocorrect hates me. I meant forgettable. Typo aside.
Musically I thought it was a banger, but what tickles everyone’s music bells is different.
Story I actually didn’t mind at all. It was the gameplay that, while fun, was rather flat and hollow. I can appreciate SE always trying different systems as is tradition, but you can tell that a lot of dev time was pulled from XVI to put into VII It is a hot take. My friend has the same opinion, but he just doesn't like Souken's music at all. The thing is, despite Souken often credited as the main composer, Uematsu was actually quite involved with 14's soundtrack, always composing the main themes of every game and expansion (Answers, Dragonsong etc), up untill Stormblood I think, and we know how the motifs of the main theme get remixed and reused. Overall, FF14's music was great (encounters, cities, overworld) and augmented the experience pretty well.
Speaking of FF14:
YouTube Video Placeholder Sorry but.. you think this music is good? Don't be. I posted the trailer because it just dropped, not to showcase/as testament to how magnificent 14's OST is.
sure, but i'm sorry that is one of the worst uses of audio i've ever seen in a trailer.
the music is horrible and you can't even really hear what the story teller is saying over the horrible music.
not that she's even telling a good story anyways.. "land nice, land cold, some saved the land". i really wish i was being pedantic here.. maybe it sounds better in japanese lmao Fair enough. I didn't like the trailer neither. Aside from the usual pretty visuals, this is probably their worst teaser trailer yet, only rivaled by Dawntrail's (but that's a low bar anyways).

Yeah its pretty bad for a trailer and I liked the one for Shadowbringer/endwalker. What a shame where that game finally gets more expansions than XI, we deserve one too!

Regarding the 14 trailer that was just posted, it was posted without context. This is the first trailer for expansion to tease it, shown at the first of 3 fanfest. Each fanfest the trailer evolves and so does the music until it reaches its final form at the final Japanese Fanfest. Basically what you are listening to is an incomplete sample of the direction they plan for the expansion's main theme.

Game companies flop cause they are public companies, and because shareholder pandering starts to become the primary function of the company.
A private company panders to their customers and becasue they want to make cool things, once they become public this all changes and the customer is no longer "the customer" but the shareholder is. It's not instant, it takes a long time and this is why SE are so garbage and all their management are souless goblins. They have been at the top long enough where it has fully corroded them to their soul and the aspect of the company that was fixated with creativity, making good games, their players has slowly withered away and they can barely do the job were created to do in the first place. Square Enix are digital pork bellies or coffee beans now, they exist for the stock market as their primary focus.
The only way to fix the company is to take it private, as happened with Twitter.
You can see the behavior with everything, with ff11 they are cutting the budget to the bone so a higher percentage of revenue goes as profits (it's counted towards ff14 btw, 11 isn't on any financial reports so it's effectively corporate padding of their flagship mmorpg). With ff14 they are dumbing it down more and more to try appeal to a wider audience of cretins, and adding more monetization (this won't even work, cause the vibe of the game is the issue and so all they will end up doing is annoying their actual players). With ff16 they tried to make a Final Fantasy game cheaply, he literally said it because he was virtue signalling to shareholders. This is like trying to make an economy ferrari.
The problem with doing this is even if the customers are "locked in" you're slowly building resentment, and that is worse in the long run than if they just left cause you're in effect destroying the fanbase and turning them into detractors.
It will also happen to Capcom, it's just a matter of time and responding to incentives of being a public company with shareholders.

Doubt it will happen anytime soon, Capcom has resident evil keeping them nice and healthy, with more remakes on the way

the esports side of sf6 is a mess, but otherwise yes Capcom is looking pretty great atm, and rightfully so.

The way it goes is as long as the company is growing, expanding customer numbers and improving (current situation with Capcom) the shareholders are friendly little puppies, cause they know the investment they made will pay out and they see the number go up. It does not matter so much if they make vastly less than SE, what matters is continual improvement on the investment. They like growth.
The moment that changes (and it has to change, nothing grows forever) they change too, and then if they cannot sustain constant growth the demands start to begin to do things that go against the customers and to take advantage of them instead. If sales go backwards, then they lose their ***completely and go full demon mode.
This is where SE is.
Cut costs, fire experienced people who cost too much, give smaller games, try to appeal to other audiences, use sweatshop labor, add micro-transactions, do collabs with chicken wing restaurants etc etc
This is the destructive phase of being a public company with these kinds of short term parasitic investors, this is when the company starts alienating the fanbase / customers. The drive to keep the shareholders happy when they can no longer expand, will end up destroying the company. This is the exact way Ubisoft imploded, and SE is in the earlier stages of this same death spiral now.
Capcom is in the honeymoon phase, the exact same thing will happen to them though cause you can't keep growing forever.
Once they saturate the male audience, demands will be made to appeal to women in the games more (or some other demo) and that will alienate the core demo and reduce numbers and then it spirals uncontrollably.

went back and watched the expansion its basically copy/pasting (heavensward) this trailer is far better and this isn't even a very good trailer and its still about 500-600x better than the slop they just put out
YouTube Video Placeholder
here is a good trailer for an expansion for comparison!
YouTube Video Placeholder
keep coping though, im sure they are almost ready to release an AI catgirl e-girlfriend for you, that seems to be the thing most modern day ff14 players are concerned with.
the fact that the WoW one is nearly 20 years old and the heavensward one is 12 years old and they are still significantly better than the evercold trailer. yikes.

I like your comparison to CoP, but I also felt a lot of Final Fantasy 4 when I played 16. Maybe it's the return to medieval themes and no cars, TVs, or cup noodles.
Before I talk about that new 14 trailer, let me start by saying some of you need to take the stick out of your *** and stop being so bloody pessimistic all the time. You know what's worse than a bad FF14 expansion trailer? No FF14 expansion at all which leads to no FF14 at all. Seems like some of you won't be happy until we return to year XXXX and you can play w/e Final Fantasy you played when you were 10 with a free juice box.
I had zero interest in playing 14 again... but they might have hooked me with the Unification actually happening. Dawntrail was trash. Wuk Lamat has to be one of the stupidest written characters since Jar Jar Binks. I'll give FF14 some leniency since Stormblood kind of sucked too, but Shadowbringers and Endwalkers were absolute top tier FF story.
Do yourselves a favor and stop looking for the bad and worse in everything. Be happy that us aging gamers even get anything made for us anymore. Kids can't sit still through a 10 second long video, you think they are gonna listen to Alphinaud or Urianger talk about literally anything?

It’s literally how it’s always been done lol. That's true. They always release a teaser, followed by an extended full trailer. One thing that stood out to me regarding Evercold's trailer was that, unlike previous teasers, it didn't tease a new job (even though it's confirmed there'll be new jobs). Might not be a dealbreaker to some, but to me it's a downgrade. Even Dawntrailer had the Viper attire teased.
To be fair though, HW, SB, ShB, and EW had an obvious edge in that they were much-anticipated continuations of the main story, while DT and EC suffer from not having that connection, so reception of the teasers wasn't as good.

Its been a while, but didnt your average Bearer only have the ability to cast weak magic?
https://www.reddit.com/r/FinalFantasy/s/RaHUHowvkO
I think matusai should be the one to to lead ff17 he is entitled to have it, not only he worked in 11 for 20 years he was a director for crono trigger.
Not to mention he also was moved to 14 to fix the battle for arr!
I don’t understand this stupid mind set by yoshi that it has to be action, look at baldurs gate, ff needs to evolve in the turn based genre, don’t change what is already main to the franchise..
We dont want action rpg
I want to cast haste reflect double magic limit break and nuke stuff!!!!!!!
What makes dragon quest xi good its still a turn based game!!
Square needs to treat ff like dq!
Make a vagrant story 2
Make a new kingdom hearts
Dont add shit to finalfantasy
Satisfy your older fans if you want a new generation of fans, or else they will lose their 30 years of their fanbse, ff was a lifestyle to me do you guys dont remember waiting for a new console to imagine how a new ff will be like in that console?
The sales is bad for 2023-2024 standards alot of the fans are grown up too it should be much higher
